A 9:00 am start turned into a 10:45 start after New Jersey showed up late to the fields and then we discovered the fields were unsafe to play on. Thanks to the park department, they filled in a few holes on the baselines for player safety. Aqil Sajjad would start the first inning off by making a stop on defense and then scoring a run to get Boston on the board for the first run of the 2012 season. The 2nd run would be plated by Joe Quintanilla. This was a milestone run as it was the 700th run that Ron Cochran has allowed in his pitching career and it gave Boston a 2-1 lead after two innings. In the third, JJ Ward and rookie sensation, Joe McCormick would go back to back and put the Renegades ahead 4-1 and the team would hold on for a 5-3 victory. Aqil Sajjad who scored twice paced Boston’s offense. The defense was a team effort as every player was credited with at least one stop. Darren Black led the team with 4 stops. The story of this game was the play of Joe McCormick. He became the first Renegade player in history to score a run and record 2 stops on defense in his first game in team history.

In a game that would surely decide who would win the Long Island Classic, both teams entered with one win on the day. Boston won the coin toss and took the field to a surprise as Braulio Thorne shocked the defense with a hit while bating right handed. Nick Esposito then plated back to back runs for the Bombers and Jim Hughes added another one as Long Island jumped out to a 3 run lead. Joey Buizon and Joe McCormick each plated runs in the bottom frame and the game remained close. In the third inning Long Island plated another three runs and the score swelled to 6-2 but Boston would make three stops on defense and Joe McCormick and Aqil Sajjad would make it 6-4 after 4 innings. The wheels fell off for Boston in the 5th as Long Island scored 4 times before Boston would appear to stop them. As the Renegades were preparing to bat it was determined that the final out was actually a run and the call was overruled. This made it impossible to play a full 6 innings and the Renegades were down 12-4. The lone highlights of this game for the Renegades was a run scoring base hit by Joey Duggan who came off the bench to pinch hit and a three run performance by Joe McCormick In his second game ever. Long Island won this game but Boston did not play well on defense and eventually Long Island would go on to sweep their three games to take the title for the first time since 2007.

Both teams dragged to the field for the last match in the 90 degree heat. Both teams were tired and it would show. Joey Buizon would score three runs in this game including a bomb into right field that cleared the 170 on the roll and lit up the faces of all sighted people on the field. That would be all Boston would need as the Wolfpack struggled to put the ball into play. The Wolfpack struck out 15 times in this game including 7 in a row between the 2nd and 4th innings. Scott Hogwood would plate the only runs for the Wolfpack in the 5th and 6th innings. Boston would get its other runs from Joe Mccormick and JJ Ward. Mccormick would finish his first ever tournament leading the team with 5 runs. These two players also accounted for the only 3 defensive stops as Ward paced the team with two.

It was highly likely that the winner of this game would win the tournament and both teams knew this coming in. Boston studied the Lightning and was ready for this game. In the first inning, Larry Haile led off the game with a line drive into center field. Aqil Sajjad then hit a ground ball to Jersey’s short fielder, Steve Rutch who hurt his calf on the play. This injury forced Jersey to hit for him which both teams thought would impact the outcome of the game… but in the end Jersey did a good job managing the substitutions and Boston could not capitalize. Rutch would go on to lead his team with 6 stops. After two in Innings of play the game was locked at 3-3 but Boston would score at least One time in every inning while the NJ bats were held silent for the 3rd through 5th innings as Guy Zuccarello, Darren Black and Evan Silver would hold them. In fact, Boston would set down 12 consecutive NJ hitters for the 2nd to the 6th inning. In the 6th inning, NJ started to heat up but the defense made spectacular plays as Larry Haile grabbed a deep hit on the 3rd baseline, Evan Silver made the defensive gem of the day on a rocket up the middle where he backed up and glided to his left to stop a shot from Rich Koppenjan and Darren Black to a hard hit away from Omney Romero to seal the game. This win would give the team energy they would take through the whole day and hopefully to the World Series.

The York Thundersticks are a new team that had never played against an NBBA team until this day. In their first game, they were still learning some of the rules. Before the game they asked to keep their calling scheme of calling players names as opposed to numbers. Back in 2002/2003 The Renegades were the new team on the block and knew what this felt like. In a game that rained on and off the whole time the Renegades would be I control the whole way and for the first time ever, Rob Thayer would get a chance to start as well as Joe Duggan making his first appearance as the Gades third string pitcher. With an upcoming World Series, Boston needed to play everyone to keep bodies fresh for the day. All 9 batters who had n at bat would score. The highlights of this game included Silent Bob (Rob Thayer) scoring his first three runs of his career and Joe Duggan hooking up with His son Joey Duggan for the first run of Joe Duggan’s pitching career. This game was 8-0 after 5 innings but the bats stayed hot for the New Jersey game and the team scored 7 runs in the 6th inning to seal the deal. After the game, many of the Renegades would talk about their experiences with the York players in hopes of mentoring them and hoping their team would grow to increase beep baseball on the East Coast.

The sun would begin To peak out after the lunch break and Boston needed this win to win the tournament and to keep their hopes up for the 2012 Beast of the East Championship. Dan Cotter and the Boston Bats would come out booming early plating three runs…but the Boston defense would struggle throughout this game and after two innings the score was 3-3 as both Greg Gontaryk and Mike Patterson would score runs. After 4 innings this game was 6-4 and the name of the game was defense as Boston was not making the outs in the field as Philly had 4 runs on 7 balls in play. In the 5th inning Boston would plate 4 runs and Evan Silver would come off the bench for some “Farmers Insurance” to score the 11th run. The offensive highlight of this game occurred in 3rd inning as Joe Duggan was called into throw to JJ Ward. This pair hooked up for a run against York and with 3 strikes they connected on a blast over everyone into deep centerfield that left the fans in awe. But in the end, it was the little Guy Zucarello would would plate three runs to pace this offense and lead this team on the field through the whole day with his energy to a tournament victory and new hardware!

It started with the coin toss. Joe O’Neill, who had missed all season with a head injury suffered at practice would call the toss for the Renegades. As the coin was in the air, Joey would not call heads or tails…instead he called “HOME”. Once the laughing stopped and the coin was re-flipped, NJ would win the toss. This would be crucial for this game. This was not the same Jersey team that Boston was used to as they had Frank Facio (from Bayou City), the top pitcher in North Carolina (Greg Para) and Walli Salahudin from NC. At first, it did not seem to phase Boston as the Gades built an 8-3 led after three innings. After 4 innings only two players would score for Jersey as Sherlock Washington and Frank Facio accounted for 5 runs. In the fifth the momentum started to swing as Joe Quintanilla was the only player to score and Joe Mccormick ended the inning by missing third base on a sure run. Para caught fire in the 5th and they got help from others in the line-up as Tony Santiago, Omar Atin and Wali Salahudin plated runs. The 6th inning was critical and the Renegades went down easy on a Sajjad weak pop up to the right side, a Zuccarello strike out and a Quintanilla grounder up the middle. Clinging to an 11-9 lead, Jersey had the top of their order up and proceeded to score three consecutive wins to walk off on Boston. New Comers Facio and Salahudin accounted for 5 of Jersey’s 12 runs as Para only struck out 4 players in his first game as a member of the Lightning. This would put the Renegades in the 3 seed coming out of their 3-team bracket as the Taiwan game was going to be a “teaching” moment per Coach Weissman.

For just the second time in team history, the Renegades would play a team from Taiwan. Coach Weissman made a decision before coming to this tournament that this game would be a teaching game and that the bench would start the contest. The problem was the bench only consisted of 2 players due to a thin roster. Joe O’Neill started at first base and Rob Thayer started at rover. Both of these players struggled to play the whole game and eventually Rob had to exit the contest for health related issues. Taiwan was amazing. They led 14-1 and only struck out once after three innings and invoked a 12 run rule where the Renegades would just bat for the rest of the game. For Boston, Larry Haile scored the one run to lead off the game…and Aqil Sajjad scored twice during the 12 run portion of the game. Taiwan was fast on the base paths and in the filed. The game ended on a missed base by Joe Quintanilla on third base which pretty much summed up the day for the Renegades…An effort that was not successful. After the game, Coach Weissman slammed his glove in a fit of rage. Not because of the result of the game but because some players were not ready to play and the team lacked focus at time. This would be the last time the team would act like this the rest of the tournament as they played with heart and gave it their all.

It was not a great day for beep baseball. Record temperatures and a heat index making it feel like 110 degrees out with 20 mph winds. Combine this with a hard field near a road and you could count on the defense struggling. Both teams fought the elements and both teams hit the ball. Chicago scored 6 times in the first as Evan Silver made two stops on Richie Schultz to help get the team off the field. In the bottom of the first, Larry Haile and Joe McCormick would combine for three strike outs while the other 4 players plated runs. The irony here is these two players each hit over .599 for the World Series and 1/3 of their strike outs came in this inning. The defense struggled more for Boston in the 2nd as Chicago plated 10 runs to tie for the worst defensive inning in Renegades history. Chicago would strike out just 4 times all game but two of them would come in the third as Boston would scratch back into the game with the bottom of the lineup providing the offense. Aqil Sajjad and Guy Zuccarello each plated a pair in the 3rd as the Renegades brought the score to 17-14. As the winds howled, both defenses continued to struggle as Chicago would plate 8 more in the 4th. Again in the bottom of the frame, The bottom of the order plated runs to make it 25-18. In the 5th Chicago plated six and continued to put the pressure on the Renegades and this time the 12 run rule went into effect as Boston would be held to just 1 run. At 31-19, Boston would get two more in the 12 run rule. For the Gades, the offense would set a few records including the first time four players would score 4 runs (Aqil Sajjad, Guy Zuccarello, Joe Quintanilla and JJ Ward). This was also a team record of 21 runs scored. Despite the offensive records the defense let uo the most runs it has ever let up in a game easily surpassing the 23 runs they allowed to Long Island in the 2008 World Series, They stopped just 23.9% of the balls put into play which was the worst defensive effort since 2008. The loss was tough in the heat as the game lasted nearly 4 hours long. The batting practice proved helpful as the bottom of the order would contribute all tournament long.

Coming off the 52 run, four hour marathon Boston had 30 minutes to rest and prepare for the Cleveland Scrappers. The weather and field were going to be a factor with high winds, a hard field and noise from the road near the field. Cleveland led off the game with a run and it looked like the potential for another marathon game however, The Boston defense flashed some “leather” as Joe McCormick, JJ Ward, and Guy Zuccarello made plays to stop the Scrappers offense. Boston’s high-powered offense showed up again, as Boston took the lead in the bottom of the first inning, and led wire to wire. Larry Haile and Joe McCormick each scored an impressive 5 runs off of 6 at bats. This was the first time in team history a pair of teammates scored 5 runs in a game. As the 104 degree heat started to affect Joe Quintanilla, Rob Thayer came off the bench to score his first ever World Series run with an impressive first-pitch hard grounder to left field. Guy Zuccarello provided 3 more runs as Boston would plate a total of 17 runs. The Renegades’ defensive managed to stop 50% of Cleveland’s hits, holding the Scrappers to 11 runs, capped off by Joe McCormick making the final put-out of the game on a ground ball to 1st base.

The Storm limped into this game after losing a heart break game to the RHI Extreme 15-14 and joined the Renegades in the losers bracket of the double elimination format. Instead of getting down, the Storm bats came out booming and plated 9 runs while the first four guys in the line-up would each plate a pair of runs in the first inning as the Renegades defense was reeling. The Renegades were hurting as Joe Quintanilla was still not recovered from his heat related illness in the Cleveland game and then Joe Mccormick hurt his other hamstring and exited the game in the 3rd inning per Coach Weissmans orders. Despite this, Boston would begin to chip away from there and after five innings the Renegades had pulled within 5 runs at 16-11. The Renegades offensive attack was led by Ron Cochran who pitched one of his best games in history only striking out a Renegade record 3.4% of the hitters in the game (1 strike out in 29 trips to the plate), On defense only Guy Zuccarello and Larry Haile would make an impact. Guy and Larry each had their personal best career games as Guy made 7 stops and Larry made 4 while playing third base. Unfortunately that was not enough because Colorado would plate 6 runs in the 6th inning to seal the Renegades fate and send them to elimination and into the 9-12 bracket. Brett Sanders was a wrecking machine for the Storm as he scored 7 times in 7 trips to the plate and added another 4 stops in the field.

After the beating that New Jersey gave Boston earlier in the tournament Boston was expecting to see of the Lightning again. In a surprise, the Lone Star Road Runners defeated the New Jersey Lightning 13-6 before falling to the Southwest Slammers 8-1 to end up in the 9-12 bracket. That would pit these teams against each other for the first time in NBBA history. Despite the teams being new to each other, the pitcher for Lone star for this game was NBBA great, Tim Hibner who had won the past three consecutive rings as the pitcher for the West Coast Dawgs. Boston entered the game with a lot of confidence knowing it had scored 49 runs in the past three games while Lone Star had just been held to a single run against the Southwest Slammers. As the game approached, Weissman reminded the team that this opponent beat the New Jersey team. Boston would jump to a quick lead by plating 4 runs in the first but would struggle to pull away. Despite the 4 runs in the first, the team struck out 3 times in the inning. After two frames and the score 5-2, Bostons offense could not get going as Ron Cochran and Rob Weissman determined that the plate on this field was much lower than the pitching mound making it harder to judge where the targets should be. The Lone Star team was picking on the right side of the Renegade defense all day. In the first three innings of the game all 6 stops were made by either JJ Ward as the right shorty or Aqil Sajjad as the first baseman. JJ Ward and Aqil Sajjad played very well as JJ got al of the junk in front of him all game long and Aqil picked up 3 of the 4 balls hit his way at first base. This would be the first game the Renegades would rely on the defense to win a game. The defensive gem of this game was made by Joe Mccormick on a shot up the middle of the field that he picked up with one hand in dead center field off the bat of Drew Bernet. JJ Ward had his best game of the tournament as he made 4 stops on defense and plated a pair of runs. Boston would advance for the chance to play in the 9/10 game against what they expected to be the Long Island Bombers but they had a surprise waiting for them.

Another East Coast team fell and surprised the Renegades as the Minnesota Millers shocked the league by beating the Long Island Bombers in a 6-5 victory giving them a chance at the 9 seed against the Boston Renegades. Controversy surrounded that game and took a run off the board for the Bombers that may have cost them the game on a controversial time out call. Boston was weary of this opponent as the last time the two teams faced was in Minnesotas first year and the Renegades barely escaped with a 2 run win. The Millers were also anchored by Steve Guerra, a Long time Long Island Bomber. The game would start off with an argument on the first pitch of the game as Minnesota argued two things about a late base call on a Larry Haile run. After a few minute delay, the run was awarded to the Renegades. Larry Haile and Joe McCormick continued their hitting and plated the first two runs of the game but the Millers would tie the game in the bottom of the frame. The 2nd inning was the dagger that Boston needed. Joe Quintanilla, batting 6th started off the inning with a run scoring pop up to the left side. Then Haile and McCormick would strike out in back to back at-bats. With two outs, Ron Cochran led the Renegades to a record inning and when the dust settled the team plated eight two out runs to make the score 11-2. This was the 2nd best run-scoring inning in team history behind the 11 runs Boston scored against Stockton in the 2007 World Series. Guy Zuccarello, Aqil Sajjad and Joe Quintanilla all plated a pair of runs in this frame. Boston would get great defense from the front shorties as Guy made 5 stops in this contest on the left side and JJ Ward had another strong outing making 4 stops on the right side. When the game was over Larry Haile and Joe Quintanilla would each have 4 run games. The Renegades would clinch the 9 seed which was an accomplishment considering the short bench they brought to this World Series. In 2011, the team relied on defense to win games but in 2012, the Renegades offense was prolific as it hit .426 and scored a Renegade World Series record of 89 runs.

Boston would need to win both games of this doubleheader to be crowned the best team on the East Coast. On a field that was slow due to heavy rains the night before, speed and defense would decide the game. Boston would jump out to 5 run lead after two innings before Long Island’s defense would settle down. The Bombers were able to get 2 runs back in the 4th but would never catch up. Joe McCormick scored three runs in this match while 4 other Renegades would contribute a run. On defense, the Renegades welcomed back Sengil Inkiala who played in his first game of the year and paced the defense with 5 stops while playing the Right Shorty position. He and Darren Black were two defensive players the Renegades sorely missed at the World Series and they accounted for 8 of the 12 stops the Renegades made in this game.

After a short award ceremony where Guy Zuccarello was given his World Series MVP trophy, the Bombers took the field against the Renegades to determine the Beast of the East. On Offense, the Renegades would get all of their production from the top two hitters, Larry Haile (3 runs) and Joe McCormick (2 runs). Heading into the 5th inning, Boston would hold a 5-0 lead and looked like it would cruise to victory when Long Island plated back to back runs from the Dejesus brothers to pull within 3 runs, 5-2. On defense for Long Island, Matt Puvogel showed the crowd why he was one of the top defenders in the World Series as he gobbled up 7 balls and had at least one stop in every inning of play. Heading into the 6th inning with momentum favoring Long Island, Guy Zuccarello led off the inning with a hit up the middle that appeared to be enough to give Boston a 4 run lead but he missed the base and Boston would not pick him up on offense. In the bottom frame, Long Island would pressure the Boston defense but the D would hold tight as it was the only inning all game in which they made three stops as Sengil Inkiala, Darren Black and Guy Zuccarello would end the contest. Boston had defeated the Bombers. Their record in the Beast of the East for the year would hold at 5-1 against Pennsylvania and Long Island and for the third straight year, Boston is the BEAST!
