Game #1 of the 2009 season felt more like football season as the teams played in 50 degree weather in a constant rain all game long. The fields were soaked and it was hard to get a ball to roll out into the deep part of the field. The team who could get more balls into the air would be the team to win this match as both teams played well defensively. Indianapolis drew first blood in the 2nd inning scoring 3 consecutive runs and they would never relinquish the lead. Boston was freezing in the rain and at the plate. Cochran had struck out 3 of the first 6 batters before Quintanilla plated runs in the 3rd and 4th. The Boston swings were inconsistent and the strike outs began to pile up as Boston struck out 5 times in 7 at-bats in the 5th and 6th innings. Boston never quits and with 2 outs Dino Vasile scored on a line drive up the middle while Larry Haile then scored on a grounder to the left side. Down by a run, Rookie Shane Cantan strode to the plate looking to tie it up. He hit a line drive down the 3rd baseline and was put out by Jerry Windell to end the game. The star of this game was Kyle Lewis who led Indy with 2 runs and 4 defensive stops playing up front on the right side for Indy.

The rain continued to fall in this game keeping the fields very slow. Scoring would be minimal again. The last time these teams had faced each other in Chicago, Cleveland walked-off in the 6th to win the game after Boston had fought hard to take a lead late in the game. Dino Vasile put the Renegades on the board in the first for Boston’s first lead of the year. Cleveland would score once in each of the first 3 innings as Christian Keeley would beat out two hits to score for Cleveland. Once again, the fire in Boston would rear its head as this team does not give up. Down by 2 runs, Vasile would score on a well struck ball to right center. Coach Weissman then removed the DH from the game and put his DF into hit. Pinch hitter Sengil Inkiala would score on the first pitch down the 1st base line to tie the game and then Rookie Shayne Cantan would score the 1st run of his career for the lead. Boston would get no insurance in the 6th. Up by 1 run, Cleveland brought the top of the line-up in the 6th. The Scrappers may have been feeling the pressure as they struck out twice to end the game (and to that point they had only 4 whiffs in the contest). Dino Vasile would be the star of this game leading his team on offense with 2 runs and on Defense with 4 stops at Left Shorty.

In a shocking development, The Boston Renegades would find the game against the Comet A team to be on local cable television. With play-by-play announcers, TV trucks and cameras watching the game, the Renegades prepared for battle. The rain had stopped and the team took what it had been doing well and stepped it up a level. The name of this game was defense as both teams would start their #2 pitchers Luis Lopez for Chicago and Dan Cottter for Boston. Chicago would start the game out by sending 4 batters to the plate and striking out three times. Larry Haile would score on a pop fly to tie the game for the Renegades in the first. Then the Boston defense caught fire as they would stop the next 5 hitters in a row with outs made by 4 different players (Haile, Inkiala, Vasile (2) and Black). In the bottom of the third Larry Haile and his roommate Shayne Cantan plated runs to give the Renegades a 2 run lead. The Comets scratched a run in the 4th and 5th but the Renegades were making play after play in the field on hard hit balls and junk as Vasile (2), Cantan, Quintanilla and Inkiala made big plays in these innings. Boston would break the 3 run tie open with 2 runs in the 5th as Haile and Inkiala kept the dream alive for Boston. By now all eyes were on this game as all the teams gathered to watch the game rooting on the underdog. The man called Big G led off the 6th with a line smash down the 3rd baseline. The next two Comet hitters struck out. Down to their last out and down a run, Wally Mozdzierz hit a bleeder up the gut of the Boston Defense that found a hole through the middle of the field for the tying run as the Comet A team breathed a sigh of relief. Boston would come up empty in the 6th as Mike Grunze made a great stop on a bang bang play from a high fly ball off the bat of Shayne Cantan that could have ended the game. Francese showed why he was the 2008 World Series offensive MVP as he scored in the 7th on a 150 ft Long fly ball which Larry Haile tracked down a split second after Francese hit the base for the winning run. Francese then made a big play in the bottom of the inning on a ball hit by Dino Vasile. Francese would be the player of the game as he scored two huge runs in the 6th and 7th innings and made 4 big stops while manning 3rd base. The 13 stops by the Boston Defense would rank as the 3rd most in team history to date

The Comet B team came into this game knowing what Boston almost did to the A team the previous day. They also struggled to score on Satuirday as they hit just .143 with 35% of their plate appearances resulting in strike outs. Boston came into this game with a ton of confidence despite not having much better numbers on Saturday (.197 and 37%). The story of the game was the Chicago Bats. They came out booming. Their pitcher Chad Perry was on fire for the Comet B team. He faced 9 batters before collecting his only strike-out of the game in the 2nd inning after getting a 5-1 lead. In this game, the Comet B team would punish the Renegades as both Mike McGlashon and John Herzog would each go 4 for 4 to lead the offense. In fact, this performance for McGlashon would help him make the offensive all-star team for the tournament as he collected 4 of his 7 runs against Boston. There was nothing to speak of for Boston as they were 12 runned after just 3 innings of play. The 9 Runs put up by the comets in the 3rd inning was the 2nd most runs ever allowed by the Renegades in an inning in team history. Mike McGlashon (nicknamed Hood) was the MVP of the game. He not only was perfect at the plate but he made 8 of the 10 defensive plays for the Comets.

Recruiting is important in beepball and this game showcased 10 rookies between the two teams with 9 of them were making their debut. For Pennsylvania, 5 of their starters were playing in their first game as captain/coach Greg Gontaryk looked on from the sideline. For Boston, Shayne Cantan was the lone rookie starting but their other three rookies saw playing time as well. Boston jumped on the board with 4 runs in the first and one in the second before Coach Weissman started to sub in all of his players. This would prove to be enough runs to win the game as the wolfpack struggled to put the ball into play. The Wolfpack would get 3 runs from Mike Patterson who was the only veteran in the batting order. Matt Shields would plate the first run of his career in the 5th for the Wolfpack. The Wolfpack offense had 14 strike-outs while their rookies struck out 78% of the time. Mike Coughlin started up front for the Wolfpack and made 6 defensive stops for the team in his first game ever to pace the defense. For Boston, Tony Flinn scored twice to pace the offense. The Cantan Brothers would become the first brothers to ever play in a game for the Renegades and they each plated runs including Justen’s first run of his career. Justen would also make his first Defensive stop of his career. Six different Renegades scored runs while Coach Weissman set a team record by getting 14 players into this game. Mike Patterson was on the losing end of this match but was the MVP of the game as he scored 3 runs, made 3 defensive stops and led his team of rookies in this match-up.

This game had it all. Drama, crazy plays, defense and offense. In the bottom of the first, it was all Dino all the time as he made 3 stops in a row. Both teams had their first runs scored by the #6 hitter in the 2nd inning as Joey Buizon and Alex Barrera both scored on bombs into right field that brought oooos and ahhhs from the crowd. Shayne Cantan would give Boston the lead in the second but it would be short lived. Long Island would score three runs to start the third before Coach Weissman would call a time out to to make a change to the defense which had blown the three previous plays. The move took Black out of Right Shorty and put Zucarello to Midfield. That move paid off right away as Black regained confidence by putting the next player out. Zucarello would also make 2 plays in the 4th and 5th for the first outs of the game at the midfield position as he shored up the defense. In the 5th inning after Long Island had built an 8-2 lead Matt Sapolin came off the bench for a pinch hit appearance. Sapolin, recovering from cancer treatments received a standing ovation from both benches in a touching moment. Long Island thought the game was over…but they forgot one thing, Boston never quits! Vasile and Shayne Cantan both scored on line drive smashes up the middle of the field. Joe Quintanilla then scored on a dribbler up the first base line and the score was 8-6 with none out. Guy Zuccarello then hit a line drive up the middle and was put out on a bang bang play by Ted Fass. Tony Flinn entered the batters box and there was an equipment malfunction with first base. Weissman had a hunch and used the extra time to make a switch to bring in rookie Justen Cantan to pinch hit for Flinn. Cantan had just finished his first ever game stepped into the box with a grin from ear to ear. In an epic at-bat after fouling off six consecutive pitches, Ron Cochran connected and Cantan hit a grounder down the 3rd baseline to Jim Hughes and he beat it out to bring the Renegades one run away from tying it. The Renegade bench roared as Rookie Justen Cantan contributed after such a grueling at-bat. Buizon stepped into the box. Buizon had struck out 5 times in 6 at-bats on the day to this point. Coaches Weissman and Lenicheck worked hard to calm Buizon down to help him with his timing. On a 3 strike count, Buizon hit a bomb into right field to tie up the game. Shayne Cantan would give them a lead and the comeback was a reality. The Bombers were shocked. The epic extra innings are captured below:

Boston was reminded that it had lost the last two contests against the Wolfpack in Haddonfield. This game would not be easy as Greg Gontaryk returned from the disabled list, the Wolfpack rookies now had two games of experience and the Renegades were without their number 1 pitcher and two starting players in Buizon and Black. The Renegades are a deep team this year carrying 18 players and two pitchers. Dan Cotter would have the bump in this game and he would manage to throw one of his best games ever. Boston would jump out to an early lead as Vasile and Shayne Cantan would lead off the game with back-to-back runs and Quintanilla would pitch in a third. The story of this game was defense. Both teams put the ball into play often. This was not easy to do as the Wolfpack had struck out 27 times in their previous two games. Also, for Boston they sent 10 different players to the plate. Despite these challenges, both teams were making contact but the defense of Boston made more plays. Dino Vasile led Boston with 7 stops making plays all over the left side of the infield. Boston would stop 12 of 14 balls put into play which is one of their best defensive performances ever. For the Wolfpack, Greg Gontaryk also made 7 stops including two outstanding plays to rob Zucarello and Vasile in the 3rd and 4th innings. On those plays he took a line drive off his stomach to make one stop and dove to his right while catching the ball between his legs to make another. Shayne Cantan would be the MVP of this game as he scored more runs than the entire Wolfpack team.

Boston would jump on the Wolfpack early again in this game as they scored twice with two outs in the first inning on back-to-back runs by Larry Haile and Joe Quintanilla. The Wolpack would score a run in the bottom of the second to make it close. But that would be as close as they could get. The Wolfpack struggled to make contact as they struck out 8 consecutive times from the 2nd thru the 5th innings. For Boston, they were able to match a career high with getting 14 players into the game. This was also only the 6th time the Renegades have held an opponent to less than 2 runs in their eight year existence. Once Again, Dan Cotter pitched well for the Renegades as he was able to make contact 75% of the time with the Renegade bats. This is no easy feat with 11 different Renegades getting at least one at bat. Larry Haile would be the MVP of this game with his two runs scored. He will credit his coach, Rob Weissman for helping him find a flaw in his swing during the 20 minute break between games that resulted in the L-Train’s confidence soaring. Its appropriate that the L-Train had a good game considering there were countless noise time-outs as the trains raced by the field through out the entire day.

Stockton was playing the host of the 2009 Beep Baseball World Series. They were too excited to face the Boston Renegades in the first game. This game would be the first ever Live streaming broadcast of a World Series Beepball game. Boston came out firing right out of the gate as the first four batters scored on 9 swings. Vasile led off with a line drive into right field on the second pitch of the game. Shayne Cantan hit his first pitch in the same spot. Larry Haile worked a full count before scoring on a grounder to short and then Joey Buizon lifted a bomb down the first baseline. Jen Boylan led off the tourney for Stockton with a base hit but that would be all for Stockton. After scoring three in the second inning, Weissman decided to start resting players and getting people playing time with a 7-1 lead. In a blink of an eye, the Stingrays made a game of it as they pulled within 3 runs in the third inning. In an effort to spark the offense Weissman pinch hit Sengil Inkiala for Darren Black and he started a five run rally where he would score twice in the same inning. Stockton’s pitcher, 16 year old Connor Brown would strike out the side in the 5th (5 of 6 consecutive batters) before Boston would invoke the 12 run rule in the 5th inning as they plated six runs highlighted by JJ Ward scoring twice in the same inning. These would be two of the first three runs of Ward’s season as he battled back from multiple injuries. This game marked only the second game in Renegade history where it invoked a 12 run rule on an opponent. The MVP of this game would be Guy Zuccarello. Guy played every inning at both right shorty and midfield and only saw 9 pitches in his 5 at-bats

Boston had a bye as they sent most of the team back to sit in the air-conditioned hotels while Bayou City defeated Stockton 20-9. The Renegades were geared up for this game to see how they may stack up against one of the elite teams in the NBBA. Boston would win the coin toss (one of only 2 coin toss wins in 6 games) and select home team. Coach Boudreaux would tell his team to score early as they had remembered the big comeback in 2007 and had just witnessed Boston scoring 11 of their 18 runs in the last 2 innings against Stockton. After the dust settled in the first inning of this match-up, Bayou City had collected 7 runs and Boston had struck out three times after only plating one run (Shayne Cantan). In fact, Boston would be dead cold as 5 of the first 11 batters would strike out and the Renegades would be buried 12-2. The infamous lunch time coma had hit the Renegades as their bats looked inconsistent in their swings. In the top of the 4th inning the 12 run rule was invoked at 17-2. But just as Boudreux predicted, the bats started to wake up. Boston would score 10 runs in the last three innings including 6 of the first 7 batters to make a battle of it in the 6th inning. In the end there was too much ground to make up. Bobby Lakey would make 5 defensive stops for the Heat on the way to the Defensive MVP of the World Series (4.78 per game). John Kibodeaux would be the MVP of this game as he scored twice in the first inning and would score in his first 4 at bats of the game on his way to place 5th on the all-offensive team at .689.

The first game of the double elimination round would pit the Renegades against the Colorado Storm. The storm had beaten the Renegades in the past two years in the double elimination portion of the bracket. Before the game started, Coach Weissman predicted a 13-11 game. His prediction would be very close…unfortunately for the Renegades. The first two innings looked like it would be all Renegades as they jumped to a 5-2 lead as Vasile and Shayne Cantan each scored twice and Larry Haile once. Defensively, the Boston Shorties were gobbling things up as Vasile made 2 stops and Zucarello made 3. The 3rd inning would start the frustration as Zucarello would lead off the inning with what should have been a run but he missed first base and was called out. Before he could collect himself, the Donuts were building for Boston. After Four innings the score was knotted at 5 a piece and Johnny Walker only had one strike-out to Boston’s four. Just when Weissman was looking to make moves, the Bats woke up and scored six consecutive times as each player in the line-up scored with Shayne Cantan scoring a pair. This would mark the only 3 runs from the bottom half of the Renegade line-up. Clinging to a 12-7 lead, Weissman elected to let the bottom of his line-up hit again despite being 3 for 9 on the day. They would go down 1-2-3. Boston would take the field and Zucarello and Vasile would make the first two stops in the field off the 5 and 6 hitters in the Storm line-up. The Storm would plate three runs in a row before Boston called a time-out. Clinging to a 2 run lead, Weissman reminded the team not to panic because if Dominguez scored they had Trujillo and Oldham who were 0-8 on the day. All they needed was one out. Trujillo tied it up on a blast up the middle. Oldham then hit a dribbler down the 3rd baseline but took two steps to first before realizing third was buzzing. In his efforts to get to the right base, he slammed into Vasile sending the ambulance on to the field.
Oldham would be called out and would be taken away with an ankle injury. The momentum was all Denver as Vasile whiffed to lead off, Cantan grounded out to Morrow and Haile hit a dribbler up the middle to Johnston. In the bottom of the 7th Shoeless Ethan Johnston led off the inning with a blast up the middle to seal the come from behind victory handing Boston one of its toughest losses in team history. Ethan Johnston would be the MVP of this game with 4 runs (including the game winner) and 6 defensive stops. He would go on to finish 8th in both offense (.610) and Defense (3.38 stops per game) in the World Series.

The loser of this game would be eliminated from the double elimination bracket as both teams were vying to move up their seed. Indy was looking for revenge for the extra inning loss Boston handed to them in 2008. The trash talking started the night before at 12:30AM in the washroom as Indy’s pitcher Darnell Booker was up doing team laundry. Coach Weissman told him to “keep doing laundry instead of getting sleep and by the time he woke up Boston would have a 12 pack on the board.” Booker was looking for bulletin board material and on just a few hours sleep he pitched the game of his life. Once again, Boston got off to a slow start as Larry Haile scored in the first and Dino Vasile scored in the second. The bottom half of the Indy line-up did some damage as Steve Michaels and Michael Lewis each scored a pair of runs to lead their club to a 6 run second inning. Boston was struggling on defense as Booker was hitting the sweet spot on everyone. In fact, he faced 21 batters before striking out his only batter of the game. At that point Indy was up 13-6 and Weissman decided he was not going to wait any longer as he made changes that paid off instantly. Quintanilla and Ward entered the game in the 4th inning and they each scored runs to start a 5 run rally as Boston pulled within 2 to make it 13-11. In the 5th inning, Boston got another big rally going as Zuccarello hit a dribbler up the middle and Vasile scored on a grounder toward first base to start things. Shayne Cantan strode to the plate looking to give Boston the lead. He hit a rocket to left field and was stopped by Michael Lewis. Larry Haile and Joe Quintanilla would each then score on line drives before Lewis made another fantastic stop on a ball hit by JJ ward in deep left.
Boston clung to a 15-14 lead after 4 1/2 innings after fighting back from a five run deficit but Indy would plate 4 consecutive runs in the bottom frame. Michael Lewis would make another amazing stop in deep left off the bat of Shayne Cantan in the 6th inning which would end the momentum of the Boston bats. In the end Darnell Booker would pitch one of his best games as he earned 18 runs on just 1 strike-out. Steve Michaels would score five times in five trips but the MVP of this game was Michael Lewis who scored in all 4 at bats and he made three huge defensive stops on lasers hit into left field in the 5th and 6th innings. His defense saved this game from going extra innings. Indy would go on to finish 7th place in the World Series after this big win. Boston would go to the 9-12 placement bracket.

The Tyler Tigers hit the free agent market hard as it picked up Renegade killer Braulio Thorne from Long Island, Mike Patterson from Pennsylvania and a few players from the Cleveland Scrappers. Their starting line-up against Boston would be made up of 50% free agents and 50% Tigers. Despite the pick-ups Tyler limped into this game with an 0-6 record being outscored 71-28 by Colorado, Kansas, Tawian, Bayou City, the Southwest Slammers and Carolina Pride. Boston was over confident after seeing that Tyler averaged less than 5 runs a game after it posted 14.5 runs in its 4 games. Maybe it was the cockiness. Maybe it was the spider infestation on the benches. Maybe it was a lack of focus. Boston looked awful from the moment they stepped on the field. Cochran threw an awful batting practice as most batters could not get the timing down. Weissman stated, it may have been his worst BP ever. Combine the problems Boston had with timing with the fact thousands of spiders invaded their bench and Boston lost focus. Boston would score 2 runs on dribblers by their Hawian rookies and a laser by Larry Haile to spot them a 3-0 lead in the first inning when trouble started. After Renegade killer Braulio Thorne led off with a run scoring pop up to 3rd base, Rosie Reed stepped into the box. Reed hit a weak grounder down the 3rd baseline that Dino Vasile was all over. After he made the play, Matt Nippins was called on to the field and in seconds was calling for the ambulance. Vasile had taken the ball right in the face and would have to leave the game. He would eventually get 6 stitches in his top lip and his World Series would be over. Boston buckled down and plated 5 runs in the 2nd inning as five different hitters scored. Then the focus would be lost. Cochran and most of the line-up would struggle. From the third inning on, Cochran would look like Roger Clemens as he struck out 10 batters and only plated 5 runs.
Thankfully for Boston, the one batter who did not contribute early in the game (Zuccarello) came through in the second half. Guy scored three times from the third inning on outscoring his teammates 3-2. He also stepped up and took over for Vasile on the left side and played every inning of the game. For this effort, Zuccarello was named the MVP of the game. Boston escaped a trap game where they had a poor performance at the plate and lost their leading defensive player/lead-off hitter. One more win would make them the 9 seed in the tourney. Tyler would go on to lose to the Slammers and finish 0-8 in the tournament

Wichita had put up some surprise numbers in the tournament as they beat Carolina 8-7 and took the Indy Thunder to the bitter end losing on a walk-off 16-15. They also had just defeated the Southwest Slammers 8-5. Boston had not seen any of the Sonics line-up and did not know what they were getting into. As the Renegades dusted off the cob webs (litterly and figuratively) they had to make a line-up with out Dino Vasile. Minutes before the start of the game, Sonics pitcher, Mike Miller received terrible news and was forced to get on a plane immediately. The Sonics would play this game without their #1 pitcher forcing coach Kevin Burton to toe the stripe. The Sonics would struggle on offense. Burton struck out the first 10 batters of the game. By the time they put a ball into play they were in an 8-0 hole. Wichita would put 4 balls into play in the game and would score on three of them as the Boston Defense was on its heels. Offensively, Boston scored at least one run in every inning and cut their strike-out totals down from the previous game. The player of this game would be Joey Buizon. Buizon had been streaky throughout the tournament. He had some great games but had struck out in 7 of his previous 8 at-bats. After doing some work to gain confidence, the work paid off as Buizon had a perfect game at the plate scoring all four times. He would be the MVP of this game. Boston would earn the 9 seed and Wichita would get the 10 seed in their first World Series appearance. The Renegades wish Sonic pitcher Mike Miller their best as he deals with a loss in his family.
