Join the Association of Blind Citizens on Saturday, October 18th for the 25th Annual Applefest at Wachusett Mountain. We know it is short notice -- but what better way to spend a fall day. Tickets for this event will be $25.00 per person and includes transportation, festival admission, luncheon voucher w/reserved seating and SkyRide ticket.

Our group will depart from Park Street Station at 9:00 a.m. and return at approximately 5:00 p.m. This should give everyone time to enjoy all of the events this excursion has to offer. ABC Trip to New York CityThe Association of Blind Citizens will be sponsoring a fall trip to New York City on the weekend of Saturday, November 17th/18th. Come to the Big Apple, and see why it's called the city that never sleeps. Through this ABC trip, you'll experience much of what NYC has to offer from locals in the know. There are two options to choose from: The one day trip by air or the two day trip via rail and bus. The itineraries are:
The cost for this trip is $250.00 per person double occupancy, or $375.00 for singles. The fee includes your Amtrak ticket from Boston to New York, NYC See It All Tour, one night's lodging, the Sunday morning walking tour, and scheduled bus transportation from New York to Boston.
The cost for the one day option is $250.00 per person. This includes roundtrip air travel from Boston to New York, transfers to and from La Guardia airport, the walking tour, and admission on the NYC Down Town tour shuttle.
Whichever option you book, you'll experience much of what New York has to offer, and be a part of this first ever ABC excursion to the Big Apple.
This New York City experience will require a substantial amount of walking and use of public transportation may be needed. In addition, there are substantial periods where participants will be on their own. ABC is not able to control environmental conditions, so be prepared to be flexible and use your mobility skills. Details will be provided following confirmation of participation.

Association of Blind Citizens free Annual Summer Luncheon
The Association of Blind Citizens will hold its Summer Luncheon on August 26th at the Fours Restaurant located at 166 Canal Street in Boston. The Restaurant is a two minute walk from the North Station MBTA station. Come and be part of an ABC summer tradition.
The luncheon will include several appetizers, a variety of hot sandwiches and a cash bar will be available. The sit-down Lunch will be served at 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM.
Joining us At 2:00 PM will be WBZ's talk radio host, entertainer, and trivia expert Morgan White Jr. You have heard his trivia game on the radio, but this is your chance to test your knowledge live. Morgan's style and wit make him a unique and interesting individual. Morgan will have many prizes to reward you for your knowledge.
To conclude the day, we will be having a demonstration of Bunco. bunco is a game of dice, played in rounds. Players take turns rolling the dice and trying to accumulate as many points as possible to win each round. This game can be played by people who are blind with minimal modifications.

ABC day trip to Nantucket island
The Association of Blind Citizens is sponsoring a trip to Nantucket Island on October 23rd.
The van will leave from the Park Street MBTA station in Boston at 8:45 A.M. and will return at approximately 8:00 P.M. We will be traveling to Hyannis and boarding the high speed ferry, The Grey Lady, for a one hour ride to the island of Nantucket. When we arrive on Nantucket we will have lunch at Captain Toby's restaurant. We will take a two-hour tour of the island and hear many stories about the island's residents and, in keeping with the Halloween season, we may even hear about some of the island's ghosts! We will have some free time to stop at a local fudge shop and the Nantucket Bake Shop, which features many of the island's favorite treats. We will board the high speed ferry at around 5:00 P.M. and finish our trip to Boston in a private van.
The cost of this trip is $30.00 per person. This includes round trip transportation from Boston to Hyannis, round trip passage from Hyannis to Nantucket and the island tour. Lunch and any treats are not included.

A day in Newport and a Local Winery

Come join the Association of Blind Citizens in Newport, Rhode Island for a day of fun as we learn about birds, grand living and wine making in New England. The first stop will take us to the Normand Bird Sanctuary in Newport, Rhode Island. We will have a private guide that will teach us about the many birds that live in New England. We walk out on to trails where we will listen and attempt to identify the various birds by their call. Our second stop will bring us to a grand Newport mansion. We will be escorted by a local guide that will talk to us about the inhabitants of these grand homes and give us much history of the area.
We will stop for lunch at a local restaurant. On the way home we will also have a chance to learn about how local wines are produced as we stop at a Rhode Island winery. This day excursion will surely be a pleasurable experience as we take part in many educational activities in a relaxing atmosphere. A van will depart from Boston at 9:00 a.m., from the Park Street MBTA Station and head south toward Newport, Rhode Island.

Yoga Class in Boston
ABC has contracted with a Yoga instructor to conduct a Yoga class for visually impaired individuals. The class will be held at the Metropolitan health club located at 209 Columbus AVE. near the Back Bay MBTA station in Boston. The first class will be held on Friday January 16 from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM.
ABC will subsidize most of the cost of the program. Each participant would pay $5 per class attended. We need at least 6 individuals to keep running these classes. To indicate your interest, please respond to president@blindcitizens.org or call 781 654-2000.

ABC Expands Scholarship Program
The Association of Blind Citizens will be offering a total of ten thousand dollars in college scholarships to blind or visually impaired individuals seeking a college degree. The Reggie Johnson Memorial Scholarship will be valued at $3,000 and seven additional $1,000 scholarships will be available. The scholarships will be offered for the 2003/2004 school year and may be applied to tuition, living expenses or education related expenses resulting from vision impairment. The application for these scholarships can only be obtained on ABC's web site. Scholarship applications and supporting documents must be received by April 15, 2003.

November 16th at 9:00 PM in the Capital Room at the Holiday Inn in Concord, New Hampshire ABC presents the movie "Hope Floats". This great comedy starring Sandra Bullock is rated PG13. The Association of Blind Citizens announces the sponsorship of 40 blind children to attend summer camps during the summer of 2002. ABC's board of directors believes that summer camp provides blind children with experiences that would normally not be available to a blind child in his or her community. Summer camps are an important building block towards developing independence and allow the blind child to strengthen confidence in his or her abilities. During the camp experience, blind children will use mobility skills to travel in new surroundings, interact with other blind children as peers and experience activities such as: swimming, boating, horseback riding, archery, beep ball, and arts and crafts. ABC hopes the sponsorship of these blind children will be an important step in allowing a blind child to gain valuable experiences that will benefit him or her in the future. ABC hopes that funds will permit the expansion of these sponsorships in the 2003 camp season.

The remaining three scholarships, each valued at $1000 are awarded to Ronit Ovadia of Pleasant Hill, California, Chris Cooke of Kenmore, Washington and Sandra D. Marsiglia of York, Pennsylvania. The ABC board of directors thanks all of the fine candidates from around the country for applying for these educational scholarships. The board also congratulates the recipients of the scholarships. A special thanks is also extended to the ABC Scholarship Committee for taking the time to review the scholarship applications. ABC hopes to be able to expand the scholarship program for the 2003/2004 academic year.
The Association of Blind Citizens announces the first national beep baseball scoreboard. ABC invites all beep baseball team managers or their designees to post team scores on our free scoreboard. You may post results from tournament games, local games against other beep baseball teams and charity games. ABC will compile all the results on Sunday morning at 9:00 AM Eastern time and results will be posted by 9:00 PM Eastern. The results will remain posted for one week.

On Saturday, September 21, from 12 P.M. to 3 P.M., the Association of Blind Citizens is sponsoring it's second annual Lunch at the Park. This year's event will be held at Cusick Park, at the corner of Charles and Boylston Streets in Boston. Come and renew old friendships and make new friends as we enjoy what will hopefully be a typical New England fall day. This is your opportunity to provide input in what activities or projects you would like to see the organization become involved with. A complimentary lunch will be served at 1:30 P.M. for all attendees, but, if you wish to come earlier, the Boston Renegades will be conducting a Beep Ball demonstration at 12:30 P.M.. This is a great opportunity for those who have never played Beep Ball before and who may be interested in trying out for the 2003 Boston Renegades.

The Boston Renegades will be holding a tryout for pitchers and catchers on April 6 from 12:00 until 2:00 PM at the soccer field at Cassidy Park in Cleveland Circle in Brighton. If you or a friend have an interest in being a pitcher or backup pitcher/catcher for the Boston Renegades, Massachusetts premier beep ball team for the blind, then this opportunity is for you.
The pitcher and catcher must be sighted and be willing to commit four hours on Saturdays from April 20th through July 27th. These paid positions will also include one all expense paid trip to Chicago to a national tournament.
Beep ball is an adaptive recreation program sponsored by the Association of Blind Citizens. If you are interested and want more information or are seeking an internship with a worthy charitable organization, please contact John Oliveira at 781-961-1023.

The Boston Renegades first practice will be held on April 20th at 12:00 pm until 4:00 PM on the soccer field at Cassidy Park in Brighton. You can access the field by taking the Green line C train to Cleveland Circle, the last stop.
The field is located across the street from where the train drops you off. When the weather is questionable, please be sure to call ABC's news and activities line to confirm that practice is being held. The news and activities number is 781-654-2000 and the announcement will be updated at 9:00 AM on Saturdays. Be sure to call before you leave to avoid unnecessary travel.
We will be having a batting clinic starting at 12:30 PM. It is very important that all players who intend to play this year come to this practice. We need to know the real level of interest and how committed players will be this summer. The clinic will be very important and will not be available again this summer. ABC also needs to determine the actual number of players that will be on the team.

The Association of Blind Citizens is sponsoring a trip to the Peterborough Basket Company, in Peterborough New Hampshire and Silver Ranch in Jaffrey, New Hampshire.
On Sunday January 27th, A New England Tradition Continues... The Peterboro Basket Company continues the time-honored tradition of basket making. For almost 150 years the company has produced baskets legendary for their quality and durability. It is the oldest business and building in Peterborough. Come and learn about the Craftsmanship, patience, and time which are all factors of this great New England tradition.
ABC members will be given a private tour of the retail space and receive an explanation and demonstration of basket weaving. After the tour, you will be able to purchase baskets and other products related to basket weaving.
We will stop for lunch at a local restaurant before moving on to our afternoon activity. We will visit Silver Ranch in Jaffrey, New Hampshire. You will enjoy the sound of jingling bells, creak of leather, and squeak of snow under runners or rumble of wheels as you take a two mile Hayride or Sleigh ride through the woods. If time permits airplane charters are available at an additional twenty dollars per person. If you're interested in this additional activity, please give me a call.
The bus will depart from Boston's Park Street Station at 9:00 AM and return in the early evening. The price for this day experience will be only $40 for ABC members and $75 for nonmembers. The price includes round-trip transportation, a sleigh or hay ride , admission to the special private tour and continental breakfast on the road.

The Association of Blind Citizens is sponsoring a trip to Nashoba Valley Winery, Orchard and J's Restaurant.
Come and celebrate the Orchard's ANNUAL HARVEST FESTIVAL with ABC on September 8th.
We will be given a tour of the winery and enjoy a wine tasting. You will be able to purchase your favorite food at a Traditional barbecue and lots of ice cream from the ice cream stand. You may enjoy your treats while you listen to live music or enjoy a hay ride through the Orchard.
Nashoba Valley Winery's signature Harvest Festival will feature the best of the Pick Your Own Season as the orchard will be in full production. Peaches, blackberries, raspberries, and Gravenstein and McIntosh apples will all be available for picking. Also, the winery's rustic farm house restaurant, is available for a more formal lunch. As we depart Bolton, we will make a stop at Bolton Orchards. Bolton Orchards has a vast retail area where you will be able to purchase your favorite and fruity delights for the ride home.
The bus will depart from New Bedford at the Wilks Library at 8:00 AM and Boston from the Park Street Station at 9:30 AM and return in the early evening. The price for this day experience will be only $30 for ABC members and $45 for nonmembers. ABC's Boston Renegades will be holding beep baseball practice on May 11 at noon at the Cypress Lights Field located on the corner of Cypress and Tappen Street, Brookline. You can access the field from the D Line of the MBTA and get off at the Brookline Hills stop and cross the street and you will be at the field. Use the entrance that contains the light towers. We will be holding practice and play our games on this field on Saturdays until june 9th. After the practice join us for a snack at a area restaurant.

The Boston Renegades first practice will be held on May 5th at 12:00 pm at Cassidy Park on the field at the corner of Chestnut Hill Avenue and Beacon Street in Brighton. You can access the entrance to the field off of Chestnut Hill Avenue. You can take public transportation that will bring you very close to the field. Take the Green line's C train to Clevland Circle which will bring you to the corner of Chestnut Hill Avenue and Beacon Street. If you proceed down Chestnut Hill Avenue, you will find the entrance to the field a short distance from the corner. You can also access the intersection of Chestnut Hill Avenue and Beacon Street from the Green Line's B and D trains. Using the C train is easier and lets you off directly at this intersection. I will have one of the team assistants at this intersection at 11:45 to assist players in locating the field.
This Spring has been very wet and has caused much damage to many of the area's baseball fields. Because of the wet weather many fields in Brookline have been taken out of service. This has left the Boston Renegades looking for a field. We are also competing with little league and other local leagues for field space. To find out if the field will be available for public use you need to call ABC's field info line where cancellation notices will be posted by 3:00 PM on the day of an evening practice and by 9:00 AM on the day of an afternoon practice.
You may reach ABC's beep baseball info line at 1-800-555-8355 and enter 1077176 at the main menu. The ABC has been granted a permit for the date and time, but the city reserves the right to close the field because of conditions related to weather or safety concerns.
We will be having a batting clinic starting at 12:30 PM. It is very important that all players who intend to play this year come to this practice. We need to know the real level of interest and how committed players will be this summer. The clinic will be very important and will not be available again this summer. ABC also needs to determine actual number of players that will be on the team. ABC has been granted a permit by Brookline for every Saturday from May 12 to June 9th. We will have the field from noon to 4 PM. We will be playing games on June 2 and 23. We will hold practice on the remaining Saturdays in May and June. I will provide more details in another message.
Please pass the word on to anyone you know that wishes to play ball this year. We will be able to work on other practice dates and schedule later but we need all players to be at this practice on Saturday afternoon. The Association of Blind Citizens will hold a meeting at the Boston Public Library from 6 to 8 PM on March 14, 2001. Come and learn about beep ball and how you can participate as a player, team assistant or volunteer. If you are blind or visually impaired, ABC may have a spot on the roster for you this summer. If you want a support role on the team then come to this meeting. Attend this meeting and learn how you should be training to play a competitive sport. Join ABC officers after the meeting for dinner at a nearby restaurant.

The Association of Blind Citizens is sponsoring a tour to an authentic maple syrup sugarhouse and the Concord Museum on March 24th.
Come with us to Parkers Maple Barn where you will experience a Sugar House in full operation. Learn how to make maple syrup the old fashioned way, with a wood fire. This gives the maple syrup a distinct flavor that you just don't get with an oil fire. Making maple syrup has been a family tradition at Parker's for 3 decades. After our guided tour of the sugarhouse, you will enjoy breakfast where you will have a chance to enjoy the maple syrup. After breakfast you will have some free time to browse in the gift shop where you can purchase many maple products. As we return to Boston we will stop at the concord Museum for a private tour. Concord, Massachusetts is a community rich in historical association, renowned as the site of the battle that began the American Revolution and as the home of the most original thinkers and writers of the American literary renaissance.
The Museum, founded in 1886, serves as a center of learning and cultural enjoyment for the thousands of visitors touring Concord each year. The Concord Museum collection began around 1850 and was exhibited before the Civil War; only a handful of Americana collections can claim to be as old or as remarkably well-documented. The Concord Museum collection is a distinguished one containing numerous examples of 17th, 18th, and 19th-century decorative arts -- case furniture, tables, seating furniture, clocks, looking glasses, textiles, ceramics, and metalware -- all with histories linking them to first owners in Concord. The collection has been recognized for its national significance by curators, historians and educators for more than a century.

The Association of Blind Citizens will be offering four scholarships to blind or visually impaired individuals seeking a college degree. The scholarships will be offered for the 2002/2003 school year. The scholarships may be applied to tuition, living expenses or related expenses resulting from vision impairment. A scholarship committee will be appointed to further develop criteria for eligibility. The Association of Blind Citizens is sponsoring a trip to Old Sturbridge Village. Come and celebrate HALLOWEEN 19TH-CENTURY STYLE with ABC on October 28th.
Old Sturbridge Village is an outdoor museum that re-creates everyday life in a New England town of the early 19th century. The museum has nearly 40 restored buildings, including mills, shops, homes, a working farm, and meetinghouses.
After completing our visit to Old Sturbridge Village, we will stop at Hyland brewery and orchard. We will be given a private tour of the brewery and enjoy some free samples. You will be able to purchase freshly baked products from the bake shop and homemade ice cream from the ice cream stand. You may enjoy your treats while you listen to live music or visit some farm animals. You may also want to take the opportunity to go apple picking in the orchard. The bus will depart from New Bedford at 7:30 AM and Boston at 8:45 AM and return in the early evening. The price for this day experience will be only $30 for ABC members and $45 for nonmembers. The price includes round-trip transportation, lunch, admission to Old Sturbridge Village and Hyland Brewery and Orchard.
