Rob Weissman made his coaching debut for the Boston Renegades as Boston made
their first trip to a tournament other than the World Series. The game got off
to a great start for Boston as Kansas struck out 3 consecutive times to lead off
the game. Joe Quintanilla scored for Boston to give the Renegades a 1-0 lead
that would stand for 2 innings. After 2 innings, Boston had put 6 of 7 balls
into play while Kansas had put 1 of 6 into play. Kansas made a pitching change
with a 2-1 lead after three innings and never looked back as their bats woke up
scoring 8 runs in the last 3 innings.

Boston jumped out to a lead as they led off the game with a run scoring hit in
the first by Joe Quintanilla. Indy wasted little time as their lead off hitter
tied it and their number 3 hitter took the lead. Indy would score runs in their
first 3 innings and that would be all they needed as the Boston bats went
silent. Boston stayed in the game due to their defense which was led by rookie
JJ Ward who had 4 put outs at first base and Darren Black who had another 3 at
the short fielder position.

Both of these teams had lost both of their games earlier in the day and they
were both looking forward to playing each other to pick up their first win of
the tournament. Strike outs would be the name of this game as the Bluff struck
out 14 times and Boston whiffed 8 times. Despite the Bluff's high strike out
totals, they did manage to plate 3 runs with one run in the 1st, 3rd and 4th
innings. Their defense took care of business as only Joe Quintanilla was able to
score as he plated 2 runs in the game. The two teams would face off again on
Sunday morning

Boston was looking forward to another chance at the Bluff, but the Bluff
answered early scoring 3 runs in the first inning. Boston would stay in the game
behind the defense of Darren Black (6 put outs). The Boston bats were cold. For
the fourth straight game only Joe Quintanilla would score a run for Boston as he
scored in the 4th inning. Boston would limp home without a win in their first
Bolingbrook tournament.

The Bombers came out bombing putting the hurt on Boston's hopes early. Oklahoma
scored 5 runs in the first inning, 2 runs in the second and 6 more in the third.
The 12 run rule went into effect in the third inning for the first and only time
in the 2003 season. Boston's only run was scored by Joe Quintanilla making him
the only player to score a run in 5 consecutive games for the Renegades.
Boston's only highlight was the defense of Darren Black who made 6 put outs in
only 3 innings of play.

In their last meeting, Kansas left Boston in the game for the first few innings.
This would not be the case today. Kansas jumped all over Boston early as they
scored 5 runs in the first inning. Boston did show some improvement as the game
went on but they were unable to score a run as they were shut out for the first
time in their 2003 campaign. Defensively, Darren Black was the highlight of the
game as he had another 6 put-outs for the Renegades.

After losing the first 2 games of the world Series by a combined score of 20-1,
Boston was anxious to get to the Consolation bracket. Their first opponent was a
new team from Florida playing in their first World Series. This match up was
between two of the newest teams in the NBBA. Unfortunately for Florida they
would be forced to play a hungry Boston team with two of their better players on
the sidelines due to injury. From the Start, Boston showed no mercy. Boston
scored three runs in the first inning. Steve Guerra and Rich Flint were the
first two players in the 2003 season to score a run without the last name of
Quintanilla. Everyone jumped in the fun as Boston set a team record with 11 runs
on the day. Joe Quintanilla, Sengil Inkiala, Steve Guerra and Darren Black would
all score twice. Rich Flint and two rookies, JJ Ward & Joey Buizon also
pitched in with a run a piece. Defensively, Darren Black accounted for all of
the put outs as he totaled 5 on the day.

The Scrappers were not happy to be in the Consolation round as they lost the
chance to be in the championship round by a fraction of a point in a tie breaker
scenario. Boston was fired up after its first win and looked to do some damage
as Sengil Inkiala stayed hot scoring a run in the 1st inning for Boston.
Cleveland would hold a 2-1 lead as Steve Guerra tied the score in the top of the
third inning. Boston had hopes of staying in the game but would struggle to play
defense as high winds made it near impossible for the players to hear the ball.
Before the game was delayed, Cleveland had done their damage. Boston would
scratch a run in the 5th and the sixth by Darren Black and Gary Anderson.
Cleveland forced Boston to play defense and Darren Black led the way with 5 put
outs. Steve Guerra and Sengil Inkiala also pitched in 2 put outs on the day.
Cleveland would eventually cruise to an undefeated record in the consolation
bracket to win the title.

Boston's only win in 2002 came at the expense of the Tyler Tigers and Tyler was
looking for revenge. Boston came into this game playing its best ball on the
season as they posted 15 runs in their past two games against 6 runs in their
previous 6 games. The name of this game would be defense...and Boston was
exposed quickly. Boston drew first blood as Joe Quintanilla and Sengil Inkiala
scored for the Renegades. Their defense could not stop Tyler though as the
Tigers tied it in the bottom of the inning. Steve Guerra game the home town team
the lead in the second, but Tyler would come back scoring three more times in
the bottom half of the inning. In the third, Darren Black scored for Boston to
pull within one run and then the bats went ice cold as they struck out 8 times
in their next 11 trips to the plate. Darren Black finished the game with another
6 put outs which would qualify him for the all tournament defensive team. Tyler
got their revenge and advanced to the next round as Boston would wait till next
year.
